The Sassy Steel Magnolia

I have a confession.  I dread being asked where am I from.  Not because I am ashamed or anything, more so because it can be a bit complicated to explain.  Especially when I was not an “army brat” as many people first assume.  (I refer to myself as a “factory brat” instead.  Automotive parts factories to be exact.)  Either way, I created a map to show the six states and different places I have lived in over the past 25 years.

my own "Oregon Trail"

You see, I dread answering the “Where are you from?” or “Where is home for you?” questions because I have very strong ties to most all of these places.  It is difficult for me to pick just one, because it really just all depends.  I would proudly call anyone of these places “home”.  The three I tend to stick to the most are: Lexington, McAllen and Oxford.  Most likely because those are the most recent & where a majority of my “learnin n schoolin” took place.

And so, if we ever meet in person, you’ll at least have a bit of background.  And if you happen to forget this post and ask me where I’m from, buckle up buddy, because the full answer takes at minimum ten minutes to explain.

Think I should add another state or stick with South Carolina for a while? Which one would you add?  I’ll admit, Hawaii was very close to being in that list.  Maybe I should strike that up again…. hmmm….

catch ya on flip side…  xoxo

Great post. I get a similar feeling when someone asks, “So what do you do?” or “What are you doing now?”

A lot of people ask these types of questions to fill the space. Many don’t really care what the answer is, they are just looking for something to say.

It’s harmless. We mean well. But sometimes I catch myself– when I ask someone, “How are you?” Do I really want to know? If not, I try to remind myself not to ask.

ps- stick with SC… many people who leave Charleston come back. At least I did.

I didn’t realize you had lived in quite that many places! Well I guess I’m on my 4th city now. I still claim Mississippi, Vicksburg in fact, when people ask. And I agree that you should stick to Charleston for a while. It seems to serve you well!

    Xx
