callanbook2French Women Don’t Sleep Alone by Jamie Cat Callan

I bought this book a while ago and let it sit on my shelf for a few months.  I couldn’t help laughing at myself wondering, wait, did I really just buy a dating book??!? Oh I think I did…but that’s not the reason I bought it…and that’s not the reason I’m telling you about it either.  I didn’t know anything about French Women other than what I’ve heard about them…..always smart, sexy, charming, glam, etc. etc……so when I first saw the book I wanted to know – Well, why don’t French women sleep alone?  Are they rocking something different from American women?  What is it about them that is so….cool?

Author Jamie Cat Callan grew up with a French grandmother and then traveled to France to interview hundreds of French women and men to help her write her book.  She depicts the lives of French women and yes, compares it to our American sistas while pointing out a few key differences along the way.  There were quite a few pieces of information I walked away reveling over but decided to only share merely a handful for you.

“And in the beginning, there is Champaigne.”

Granted they were talking about dinner parties and entertaining but how can you not love a book that insist on Champaigne being such an intricate part of dinner?  One of the differences Callan discussses is the idea that French women don’t date, they have dinner parties with mixed groups of friends.  All very casual, extremely less pressure filled, and always a place to seduce and be seduced.

“For a French woman, every moment of the day & every activity is an opportunity to enjoy the sensual pleasures of life.”

Imagine walking through life seeing every minute like this.  Life does not become a hassel or daily tasks a bother, but it becomes alive again, exciting, passionate.  How life is and always was meant to be!

“The one thing that makes you look & feel absolutely beautiful is your own unique self, your expressions of heart and mind.”

Smart is sexy and sexy is smart, and you don’t have to mold yourself into another person’s ideal.  Simple as that.  No need to go into any more detail here.

“We get accustomed to only using ‘everyday’ things, and yes, our self-esteem plummets.”

Now this is one aspect of the book I have put into full swing.  I never really have saved the good stuff for good occaisions, and now I definitely don’t!  Fine china, jewelry, lotions, clothes, lingerie, you name it – I stopped saving “the good stuff” and used it to replace my “everyday stuff”.  Much happier ;)

- – and my favorite quote of the entire book – -

“Life is romantic, if we want it to be.”

Nothing says it better.

Granted these are all things that yes we already knew, but everynow and then you need a little reminder to get you back on track.  I will admit that there were one or two things that I didn’t agree with in the book, but for 95% of it I’m a HUGE fan!  Now, I didn’t find and fall in love with the man of my dreams after reading this book.  I did however find and fall in love with me, all over again.  Even now when I catch myself caught up in the hustle and bustle, ups and downs that I’m in, just going through and reading my notes was a great reminder of all the things I took away from the book.  It might be time to kick it back into gear again….the French woman way.

So go check it out here at The Sassy Steel Magnolia’s Amazon Store. *You can find, purchase and download any of The SSM Book of the Months or Music Snacks! (ok yes, I get a tiny slice of the pie, too)

My friend, Lindsey, just got back from a dreamy vacation in Paris. She was actually stuck there due to the volcanic ash. She came home loving life and said the simple act of getting a coffee was such a luxurious pleasure and she wants to keep the way she felt upon returning home alive in her day to day activities. Sounds like a fun book!
