Last week a friend mentioned how she’d never seen my room and how she wondered what it looked like – how it was decorated – what filled my four walls. It wasn’t the first time I’ve heard that sort of statement. I get it more often than not, actually.

For starters, it’s quite cluttered to be honest. I rent a room in a 3 bedroom duplex where I’ve lived for the past 3 1/2 years. It’s not that I’m a pack rat (ok maybe a little, but that’s what storage units are for) or a hoarder, but more so I have crammed both my bedroom, future library / writing / inspiration room, a few items of a living room, hidden dish wares for a kitchen, and a couple of other odds n ends and such, all in my own mid-sized, rented room. Sounds odd, right? Right. Well, it works.

But that’s actually reason #2 not a lot of people have seen my bedroom. Reason #1 is because it’s MY room. MY world. It’s private. If I have people over to the house, I prefer to keep them in common areas, i.e. the kitchen, living room, dining room, etc. I never open my whole house up to large groups, or even a small dinner party. I like to keep that part to myself. If I visit someone’s house, I dare not ask to see their bedroom unless I know them quite well. It’s a privacy thing. Almost like asking to see in someone’s secret drawer.

However, because my friend brought up a very valid point – that our bedrooms are a reflection of ourselves – I have decided to share a few snapshots of things that compose what it is that I call my world. These are the items I see each and every day, what I wake up too, and what I lay my head down to sleep too. So sit back and enjoy a sneak peek into my world.

*Please keep in mind about the whole multiple room pieces jammed into one room situation. I probably should hold off on actually building my future build-a-home till I have more than one room for storage and display. C’est la vie!

Believe it or not, this is only a portion of my book collection.

Knick-knacks are everywhere around my room. They all have a wonderful, symbolic meaning and I smile every time I look around. I also love love love having fresh flowers in my room – this week it’s my favorite flower: Daffodiles! (I got them at Harris Teeter for $2.99 a bundle. Sweet life!)

I keep most of my jewelry out for display because I seem to collect it like art. (well that and it’s easy for me to grab what I need if running out the door) Most people are surprised to discover I rarely ever pay more than $20 for a piece of jewelry. I have a super top-secret spot where I find all my vintage faves! ;)

These are a few of my favorite things…. starting from top left:

    • my blue velvet recliner that belonged to my Dad

    • the one of a kind painting Auntie gave me for my college graduation

    • the Rand McNally Old World Map I saved from a trash bin at work – waiting to be framed

    • the first quilt – other than a t-shirt quilt – my Sista Sista ever made

    • a mini-photo collage of my two favorite people :-)

So there you have it – a little slice of my world. right there on your computer screen. I hope you enjoyed the sneak peek and that it helps paint a clearer picture of who I am. Maybe when I do move into a bigger place and can spread my stuff out a bit more, I’ll post a few more snap shots for you. Thanks for visiting! xox

    Mah-velous Magnolia

And we’re back with a New Year & a new round of badges to pass out! This week’s Mah-velous Magnolia is going out to one of my favorite photographers / people to follow on twitter / bloggers / all around wicked awesome person I’m very happy to have found via the World Wide Web.

That person happens to be Nichole. The creative heart of Little Brown Pen.

I first started following Nichole not long after joining the Twitterverse. From there I quickly found my way to her blog, and thus began my love affair with her photography. With each snapshot of Paris, I find myself longing to travel across the pond more and more.

It wasn’t until recently [within the past year or so] that I have found myself in awe of this magical city. The unique and in-the-moment photography of Little Brown Pen has had quite a bit to do with this new found wonderment. Now I don’t want to sound gushing but believe me when I say: these aren’t your typical photos we’re talking about here.

They’re filled with the every day details that bring life to the city …. the cracks in the buildings …. the hidden surprises around the corner …. the colors who seem to flow in and out as if the city is their own private playground. Seriously, what’s not awesome about that?! I rest my case. Go check it out. ASAP.

Bonus: You can have a piece of Little Brown Pen in your own home. Keep track of your life with LBP Calendars [I love giving these mini calendars out as happies.], or decorate your life with a Color Series or two [Scored the White Set & the Gray is calling my name soon, too.].

Learn more about Nichole at her blog [her bio is Ace of Diamonds, fyi], follow her on twitter if you’re a tweeter, or be a fan on facebook. Either way, take a break from your busy task-filled day to walk down the streets of Paris…Little Brown Pen style. I’m pretty confident you’ll be happy you did.

    :: happy first Friday of 2011 ::

psst… want to see my favorite LBP picture? It’s right here.

The Mah-velous Magnolia badge will be awarded each Friday to a selected lady {or a few..or fellas..we’ll see!} who has had an impact on my week.  Who knows — maybe you’ll be up next!

My Sister has always told me I will have the best coffee table in America.

It’s safe to agree with her on that. I have a slight obsession with coffee table books. And although I don’t exactly own the coffee table currently being used where I live, I am constantly stocking up on coffee table books to place in my future home [ que build-a-home here ].  For as many stands I have holding books of literature, I have an equal number storing my coffee table books and view both as equally important.

While great works of literature inspire you with great writing, engrossing stories, motivational quips and the like, coffee table books provide me with visual stimulation – a chance to explore a different world, step back into loved memories, tap into an instant source of endless inspiration. That’s why I chose to dedicate this month’s Book of the Month to a few of my favorite Coffee Books in my collection.

Whether on my night stand, coffee table, in my bathroom, on a shelve – these books all represent a part of me and my aspirations. I love that at any given moment you can flip to one of the 101 Greatest American Poems, become entranced by Pablo Neruda, or laugh at the quick witted Mary Phillips Designs….

…. or see some of the sights from my college days in Oxford, Mississippi through Wyatt Water’s incredible watercolors, or glance at Gil Elvgren’s amazing pin-up works [secret confession - I've always wanted to be an old fashioned pin-up like the girls in Gil's book] …

…or catch a bit of the Spirit of India, maybe add a touch of Province Style, or even fall in love with my latest addition to my coffee table book collection – Romantic Style.

Whatever the reason may be, I simply adore each and every one of my coffee table books. [and this is only a tiny fraction of them] They’re not only inspiring in their own ways, but great conversation starters, key insights as to the owners, and always lovely Christmas presents!

Taschen publishes some of the best coffee table books on the market but you can find awesome deals at the bargain tables at Barnes & Noble. (keep an eye out for discounted Taschen books – score!) Regardless of where you get one, make sure it represents something about you. More than a book of pretty pictures and the like, a really good coffee table book is an extension of the owner – a story … of past, present, or hopeful future.

    Books Featured Above :
101 Great American Poems by The America Poetry & Literacy Project
    Taschen Icon Series: Province Style
Why Limit Happy to an Hour? by Mary Phillips
Gil Elvgren: The Complete Pin-ups by Taschen
    Love Poems by Pablo Neruda
An Oxford Sketchbook – Watercolors by Wyatt Waters
    Romantic Style by Selina Lake
Spirit of India by Gill Davies

*As always, you can pick up a copy of any of the above books in The SSM eStore [you know how I like to make it easy for you] and dress up your coffee table (or side table or bathroom stand or kitchen counter or…where eva) today!

And I’m back with another edition of build-a-home! I’ve slacked a bit on building my future home since my previous, dishware edition, but I’ve decided to put myself on a schedule of at least one build-a-home post a month so hopefully the delay won’t happen again.

Here’s the deal: I constantly see clips of pieces I want to add to my future living quarters. I play an imaginary game of build-a-home, if you will, for my currently fictitious living space and have decided to start cataloguing my finds in various posts – if for anything to help me keep track of them all!

This one’s on chandeliers. I absolutely adore chandeliers and would cram as many of them into a house as possible … with a few lingering outside on the back porch and hanging in the trees for ambiance. Here’s a few I’ve found so far.

This one for a sitting room.

Who wouldn’t love a closet chandelier?

Quite nice chandelier for a bedroom.

    Dining room perfection.

What do you think? Too much for the main hall entrance? I think not.

    -

You know what, I’ll just take all of these to go. I’m sure I can find space for them.

That does it for today’s build-a-home : chandelier edition. Keep an eye out for me and send links my way if you see any must have chandeliers floating around. Keep an eye out for the next edition of build-a-home…I’m thinking mirrors….or couches – I do love my couches & chairs!

    Happy Saturday – Cheers!

I should be working right now. Cranking out articles and write ups to pay for the hotel room I just booked for a friend’s wedding in San Antonio (as well as the plane ticket I’ve yet to book), but instead I’m engulfed in scouring the World Wide Web for pieces to add to my future living quarters. I’m playing build-a-home, if you will, for my currently fictitious living space. This time it’s dishes. Dishes to put the food that I currently don’t know, but am learning, how to cook. (It’s ok if you have a puzzled look on your face, I do too, and I’m the one who just typed that sentence. ) Such is life.

:: thought I’d share my little game with you, here’s what I’ve come up with so far ::

A few of these Dogwood sets that this lucky lady has.

When entertaining, I’ll go with what this girl put together.

These kids for serving purposes I found here on flickr.

This gold plated flatware I found here is quite lovely.

And of course I can’t forget my mason jars. I like these blue ones I found here at 2 Clever Blog.

I think that’s a decent start on my dishware. Now I just need to print this out and take it with me to every antique / junk / pay-n-trade / garage sale shop I see. Unless any of you want to get rid of a few things around your house. Think about it ;)

All right, enough play time for Jennie B. I’ve got a wedding in five weeks and that hotel room and plane ticket aren’t going to miraculously pay for themselves. What can I say – it’s the life of a professional bridesmaid!

    :: sweet dreams ::
