Today’s Mah-velous Magnolia goes out to legendary icon  Ingrid Bergman.

The embodiment of on-screen sophistication, Ingrid was indeed a woman with unabashed feminine wiles, irreplaceable talent and incredible bravery shown during her eight year battle with breast cancer.

“Time is shortening. But every day that I challenge this cancer and survive is a victory for me.”

Well known for her role as Ilsa in Casablanca, Ingrid appeared in many well known titles such as Intermezzo: A Love Story, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Gaslight, Murder on the Orient Express (to name a few),  earning her a great deal of acclaim in the world of film.

“I’ve gone from saint to whore and back to saint again, all in one lifetime.”

The American Film Institute ranks her as the fourth greatest female star of American cinema and if you’ve ever seen one of her films, you will certainly agree. It was stated about Ingrid that she always strove to be a “true woman” and that is one of the things which resonates deeply with her fans across the globe.

She continued her acting career, determined not to give in while battling breast cancer, and left a legacy which can never be doubled in the likes of tinsel town present or future.

“I have no regrets. I wouldn’t have lived my life the way I did if I was going to worry about what people were going to say.”

It occured to me earlier this week that maybe not everyone was as familiar with one of the silver screen’s all time greatest icons as I am.  I discovered this when I mentioned over drinks that I was suffering from a case of the Holly Golightly(s) and was immediately given an inquisitive look. Shocking to me, heartbreaking for them not to know who on earth is this Holly Golightly person. Well for starters she’s this week’s Mah-velous Magnolia. But in mainstream, she is the undefinable character portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Holly lives in a partially furnished apartment in a building where she often forgets her door key (thank goodness there’s always the quite helpful Mr. Yunioshi to open the door), with an unnamed cat who is called Cat but still neither one belonging to either, she visits Sally Tomato (an ex-mobster) at Sing Sing once a week to deliver the weather report, parties in great company, makes up the rhythm as she goes, defeats the mean reds by visiting Tiffany’s, is determined to marry a South American millionaire, has questionable ways of exactly how she earns her money, enchants her neighbor Paul even though he has his head firmly planted on his shoulders, finds comfort in escaping through fire escapes and bathroom windows, and … and …

Well, you get the point. Sometimes we all catch a case of the Holly Golightly(s). <– and some of us get stuck there for a little longer than we should! Now if only the wardrobe would magically appear in my closet when ever I slip into a Holly Golightly frame of mind then I’d be in business.
