Few girls can resist the coveted teal blue box box and white satin ribbon.

Maybe that’s one reason I gravitated to this month’s Book of the Month sitting there on the shelf at Target, or maybe it was the vintage photograph in the background. Whatever led me to reach out for Summer at Tiffany knew I was looking for the perfect balance of light-hearted laughter, girlish Summer fun, unforgettable history, and a series of life altering events.

In Summer at Tiffany - A Memoir by Marjorie Hart, the reader is taken back to the summer of 1945 and follows the journey of two college girls from Iowa in their first summer in New York City.  With the approval and contributions of key players from that summer, Marjorie tells the story of her and her best friend, Marty, as they board the train from Iowa for a summer neither of them will ever forget.

“I’d never even worn earrings in my whole life.” – Marjorie

As the first female pages to ever work at the exclusive Tiffany & Co., Marjorie and Marty spend their summer at the greatest jewelry store to ever grace this fine Earth.

Midshipmen and Judy Garland, bourbon sniffing and a vodka daiquiri with a twist, Old Man Tiffany and Mr. Byoir, the Empire State Building and the End of WWII, a first love and a near heart attack, the Four Hundred and the Russian Tea Room, the Cafe Society and the nurse.

“The choices were staggering when you worked at Fifth Avenue and Fifty-seventh Street, the luxury corner of the world.” – Summer at Tiffany

In a truly entertaining and heart warming story, take a step back in time and see through the eyes of a young girl during one of the most pivotal summers in American History. Even after the summer tale is over, read through to the end of the book to catch up with Marjorie, Marty, Jim and the gang to see what’s happened in their lives since that summer nearly 60 years ago.

I laughed and I nearly cried, I got chill bumps and I gasped a time a two but more so I smiled as the tag line of the book never left my mind …

Do you remember the best summer of your life?

For the rest of the summer you can find me {Between the Sheets} *…. look at the new button over to the right….  as I’m a member of A Little Summer Reading List put together by Rachel over at Little Girl, Shiny World. The first book – The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death by Charlie Huston – is … interesting … to say the least, but the author indeed has an incredible way of telling a story and creating imagery with his words. I’m definitely learning a lot (which I often do from reading other author’s works) and not just about different styles and techniques to add to my writer’s bag. I’m pushing through to try and stay caught up with the group, so I’ll let you know my over all review sometime soon.

Thanks, Rachel for putting the group and list together & for all of you readers out there, cruise on over to her site to check out the full list of madame bloggers participating in the Summer Reading List – you can find us on the right!

Oh but is it really true?

The course of true love never did run smooth. – Lysander to Hermia

There’s one way to find out. Pick up a copy of June’s Book of the Month:

William Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

My favorite of all Shakespearean works of art, A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes you through the journey of 4 lovers, a world of fairies, a terrible play inside of a play, a magical forest, and so much more. (And who doesn’t want to read all about that?!)  But don’t be fooled, what Shakespeare brings to life behind the play is the best part.

I am that merry wanderer of the night. – Puck (Robin the Fairy)

With the play’s themes of Love’s Difficulties, Magic and Dreams swirling in and out of lines of prose and poetry, you will easily find yourself caught in the Fairy Forest at Night….when all comes to life by moon’s true light. But take a minute here and there to really think about what he might be saying to you about life and love in general. I think each person takes away something different from the play in their own unique sense.

There’s no need to be weary about picking up A Midsummer Night’s Dream if it’s been a while since you’ve read Shakespeare. True, his work can be difficult to read and frustrating to understand, but the Barnes & Noble Shakespeare Collection has helpful translations and meanings in the left hand margins to better help you understand his work. And it’s such a short play that it’s easy to read a few times. (You’ll notice something new every time, I promise!)

And so I bid you adieu…

If we shadows have offended, think but this, and all is mended, That you have but slumbered here while these visions did appear. – Puck

Pick up a copy of A Midsummer Night’s Dream – from the Barnes & Noble Shakespeare Collection here at The SSM eStore and make tonight your own steamy and dreamy Midsummer Night.

*And don’t forget to enter the charmed & dangerous give away! I’d hate for you to miss the celebration.

callanbook2French Women Don’t Sleep Alone by Jamie Cat Callan

I bought this book a while ago and let it sit on my shelf for a few months.  I couldn’t help laughing at myself wondering, wait, did I really just buy a dating book??!? Oh I think I did…but that’s not the reason I bought it…and that’s not the reason I’m telling you about it either.  I didn’t know anything about French Women other than what I’ve heard about them…..always smart, sexy, charming, glam, etc. etc……so when I first saw the book I wanted to know – Well, why don’t French women sleep alone?  Are they rocking something different from American women?  What is it about them that is so….cool?

Author Jamie Cat Callan grew up with a French grandmother and then traveled to France to interview hundreds of French women and men to help her write her book.  She depicts the lives of French women and yes, compares it to our American sistas while pointing out a few key differences along the way.  There were quite a few pieces of information I walked away reveling over but decided to only share merely a handful for you.

“And in the beginning, there is Champaigne.”

Granted they were talking about dinner parties and entertaining but how can you not love a book that insist on Champaigne being such an intricate part of dinner?  One of the differences Callan discussses is the idea that French women don’t date, they have dinner parties with mixed groups of friends.  All very casual, extremely less pressure filled, and always a place to seduce and be seduced.

“For a French woman, every moment of the day & every activity is an opportunity to enjoy the sensual pleasures of life.”

Imagine walking through life seeing every minute like this.  Life does not become a hassel or daily tasks a bother, but it becomes alive again, exciting, passionate.  How life is and always was meant to be!

“The one thing that makes you look & feel absolutely beautiful is your own unique self, your expressions of heart and mind.”

Smart is sexy and sexy is smart, and you don’t have to mold yourself into another person’s ideal.  Simple as that.  No need to go into any more detail here.

“We get accustomed to only using ‘everyday’ things, and yes, our self-esteem plummets.”

Now this is one aspect of the book I have put into full swing.  I never really have saved the good stuff for good occaisions, and now I definitely don’t!  Fine china, jewelry, lotions, clothes, lingerie, you name it – I stopped saving “the good stuff” and used it to replace my “everyday stuff”.  Much happier ;)

    - – and my favorite quote of the entire book – -

“Life is romantic, if we want it to be.”

    Nothing says it better.

Granted these are all things that yes we already knew, but everynow and then you need a little reminder to get you back on track.  I will admit that there were one or two things that I didn’t agree with in the book, but for 95% of it I’m a HUGE fan!  Now, I didn’t find and fall in love with the man of my dreams after reading this book.  I did however find and fall in love with me, all over again.  Even now when I catch myself caught up in the hustle and bustle, ups and downs that I’m in, just going through and reading my notes was a great reminder of all the things I took away from the book.  It might be time to kick it back into gear again….the French woman way.

So go check it out here at The Sassy Steel Magnolia’s Amazon Store. *You can find, purchase and download any of The SSM Book of the Months or Music Snacks! (ok yes, I get a tiny slice of the pie, too)

Nearly every woman has picked up a  Cosmopolitan magazine a time or two. Some ladies have stacks of the magazines they’ve saved from over the years. Keeping them as references with favorite articles tabbed and the best tips circled. Wouldn’t it be great if there was one resource which housed the best of the best of this timeless magazine? If only the top seat of the magazine hand-picked these articles and put them all into one book for us to keep with in reach. Good thing for us Editor in Chief, Kate White, did just that! For this month’s Book of the Month, I chose White’s

You On Top: Smart, Sexy Skills Every Woman Needs to Set the World on Fire

Formerly titled How to Set His Thighs on Fire, White compiled 86 of her favorite lessons learned during her first 8 years being the Editor in Chief of this world famous magazine. Covering a wide range of topics from Love, Life, Men, Work and of course Sex, this book is a great reference for anyone who’s ever referred to herself as a Cosmo Girl.

You On Top by Kate White How to Set His Thighs on Fire by Kate White

It never hurts turning to the Toss Out Your Five-Year Plan chapter and reading “But there’s a danger in being so locked into a life scheme that you miss an opportunity that’s smack-dab in the road in front of you or a new adventure that beckons you from a mysterious side road off to the right or left.” (doesn’t that alone make you want to drop the 5 year-er?) Or reading about how to get the perfect smokey eyeshadow look or How to Find the Time to Do the Things You Really, Really Want. I do love the chapter where Kate talks about Serendipity — we all love a little Serendipity in our lives — and she’s right, it really is in ‘direct proportion to the amount of time your butt is off the sofa.

I’ve passed out a few copies to a couple of friends as gifts and have even lent mine out a few times. I love picking up this book and skimming through the pages looking for the right trick to put a little pep in my step, and I think it’s something that many of yall will enjoy as well!

Hope you’ve enjoyed February’s posts. As always, thank you so much for stopping by! And keep an eye out, there’s some really great things coming up…

For January’s Book of the Month, I wanted to take a trip down memory lane and also be reminded of what may be just around future’s corner. I have always loved this book and think it teaches incredible lessons for anyone of any age. It tells you about the joys and the dark parts of life and it always reminds you to keep going no matter what. It’s great to re-visit whenever you are about to start something new – a year, a age, a job, a city, etc. – or even when you’re smack dab in the middle of something wonderful! (And besides, it’s good to go back and read childhood books…we all need to keep in touch with the little girl inside of us, right?!)

I hope you enjoy it and sit back and smile, because we all need a little Dr. Seuss once in a while…
