What is it about turning another year older that makes people look back on things?

People love asking What do you want to be when you grow up? And starting at about the age of 7 I knew exactly what I wanted to be and would have no hesitations answering – I want to be famous! Fast forward nearly 20 years..the answer is still the same..with a few — ahem — adjustments.

    Mae West

When I was little I thought being famous meant always looking glamorous, smiling, feeling pretty, having diamonds draped all over you, having a touch of sass, being happy, and showing little girls they can be all of these things and more. Old Hollywood Glamor is what I thought of when I heard the word famous, and that image still rings true today.

The next question would inevitably be – Well, what do you want to be famous for?? And they’d catch me on that one. You see, I never really knew the answer, I just knew I wanted to be famous. One of those childhood dreams we all have like I want to be a princess or I want to play professional ball. I did finally come up with what I wanted to be famous for doing and it makes perfect sense to me -

I want to be famous..for being fabulous.

That’s it. Nothing too over the top. Just me being me. That’s what I want to be famous for.

Now I may not have diamonds dripping from my ears, neck and fingers (yet!) and some days I may not be feeling oh so glamorous, but looking back over past years, I’d say I’m doing a pretty good job of making my little I want to be famous come true. Granted it is what I wanted to be when I was little, and the only standards I have to hold it against are mine – so maybe I’m a little biased in my thought process..but maybe not ;)

A lot of people tend to give up on childhood dreams. The truth is though that it’s never too late to make those childhood dreams become adult realities. Whether you wanted to be a princess, a detective, a teacher, a fortune teller, an ice skater, a Rock Star, a football player….anything. I bet if you sat down and looked at the qualities surrounding what you wanted to be, you’d find those same qualities in yourself and what you are doing today.

Now it’s your turn to take a look back and think about what YOU wanted to be when you were little.  Do you think you have some of those qualities today? I bet you do…..

    Champagne

    -

I love Champagne. It’s one of my top two drinks of choice.

And no matter what you’ve thought in the past, you don’t need a reason to have a glass. (at least I never do) But if you feel the need to justify the bubbly that I hope you’ll be sipping at some point this week – and the whole “it’s Jennie B.’s Birthday Celebration Week” excuse isn’t doing the trick – enjoy it on the basis of Celebrating just how Awesome you are.

    -

Whether in stilettos or sweat pants..you’re the ultimate Rock Star.

And that is definitely worthy of a few Champagne Cheers!

I could have easily selected a song about being fearless and going after something or starting over with a new beginning, but honestly, I’m not sure any of that would even be possible if I didn’t have a reason to send out this song. Read on….

I’ve been very fortunate over the past month and a half to have spent a great deal of time with family and close friends. Such a great way to end the year: an awesome Thanksgiving in Connecticut, a weekend with high school friends in Texas, followed by a Christmas get away in the small West Tennessee town I call home, all rounded out with a trip down to Oxford, Mississippi-home to my Alma Matre.

It’s been quite the ending to quite the year – and a great jump start for 2010! Being around those who know you the most, the ins and outs, the good, bad and heinously ugly…..is always comforting, rejuvinating and empowering. Sometimes when you’re completely lost they hold a little light to remind you of your goal and to help keep you moving forward. (for me it’s usually more of a kick in the ass than holding a candle) But either way they keep me going even when I don’t realize I need the help.

So this week’s Music Snack goes out to those who’ve helped me make it through my past years…and those who’re going to help me make it through years to come.

Thank you — I wouldn’t be The Sassy Steel Magnolia I am without you!

    ~ Happy New Year ~

  • December15th

I spent the morning tromping through stores and toy isles with the best of ‘em. Christmas is right around the corner and this Sassy Steel Magnolia’s got 3 nieces, 3 nephews, 1 godson, 2 brothers, 1 sister, 2 sister-in-laws, 1 brother-in-law and a momma on her list. I’ve noticed that over the years I have less and less on my wish list because I get so caught up in what and who else I’m supposed to be getting gifts for and such. I know, I know — it’s not about gifts and the Season has gotten so commercial and the true meaning of Christmas has been lost and yadda yadda yadda..trust me, I know. And I agree for the most part, I really do.

But, sometimes I can’t help to think back to how nice it was when I got to go sit on Santa’s lap and ask him for whatever I wanted without a care in the world. No one scoffed at me for asking for too much or at how crazy something was.  Nobody told me to stop being ridiculous because we’re in a recession or that I need to grow up or how many people have it worse than I do. I could say anything in the world and Santa would simply smile and nod his head.

So what do I do as I sit in this coffee shop and try and figure out what toys I should get which niece or nephew all the while making sure I don’t get them confused? Well, I decide I’m going to forget about everything for a few minutes and write a letter to the big man in the red suite myself…..

    Dear Santa,

He’s gotta listen at least a little, don’t you think? We really do have so much in common. He likes red, I like red. He likes making people smile, I like smiling……. Santa??!?…………….Santa Babyyyy?!……

Oh well, back to Star Wars, Crayola & Disney Princesses for me. One can always hope & believe.

Actually speaking of Princesses, I wonder if…….
