PhotobucketToday the badge goes out to someone you’ve heard me mention a time or two (ok let’s be serious – like a gazillion times probably) but that’s simply because she is my absolute favorite person in the whole wide world – and it just so happens that yesterday was her birthday. This week’s Mah-velous Magnolia is none other than my Big Sister, Jessica.

Now I could sit and talk on and on about how we used to (and sometimes still) get into the biggest cat fights or how she steps in when my mind often steps out or how looking back all those times I was Jessica’s Little Sister wasn’t too bad or … you name it.

Simply put – she’s my favorite person, my best friend, and my Sista Sista – and that sums it all up.

    • Always my Sister, Always my Friend •

Cheers to beginning a new decade!

    loves you

Photobucket My dear friend Casey is coming up to this city by the sea for a visit tomorrow. I’m so incredibly excited I can hardly wait! You may remember the guest post she wrote for us titled White Russians and the Big Lebowski back in the Spring where she revealed one of the most pivotal times in her life. I’ve been counting down the days till her arrival and with great anticipation I send out this week’s Mah-velous Magnolia badge to the phenomenal woman behind the works of A Five-Leaf Clover.

From the moment I first met Casey, (you can zip over to her guest post to find out a little more on how we know each other) she has always been a source of unmeasurable inspiration. You know those people who always seem to find the unique, artistic, beauty in things? The ones who see the other side of the rock? That’s Casey and that’s one big reason I adore being around her. That and she brings a sense of home in a still often unfamiliar city by the sea. She helps keep me grounded and a little less all over the place….and since she’s the closest in driving distance, that definitely in comes in handy!

Cheers to a wonderful weekend to each and every one of you!

Remember your manners. Always act a lady.

Don’t go putting your business out there for everyone to see.

And for Heaven’s sake, keep your knees together and your feet on the floor.

    *Happy Birthday to my Mother who’s birthday was last Friday. I’m not at liberty to say how young she is – as a true lady never reveals her age – but it’s always worth continuing the celebration a few more days. Thank you Mary Alyce, for never giving up on us, no matter how many rules we broke. {…or break}

When you need a little more than a smile or a cup of tea to get your week in motion, the Sassy Starter will be here every Monday to get your wheels turnin’ in a classy – sassy – fabulous sort of way.

I know not all my readers are from a little slice of Heaven I like to call South of the Mason Dixon. *not everyone can be so fortunate, darlin ;) But don’t you fret not for one minute! Just because you don’t live here or maybe haven’t been back for a visit in a while by no means goes to show you can’t put a little Southern Sparkle in your every day ways…

[note: I am no expert in Southern culture or every individual living in the South, but I have indeed lived here my.whole.life. so I think that gives me a bit of credibility, hmm? Now be a dear and keep reading on along....]

Try a few of these sayings to put a little Southern sparkle & sass  in your day:

    • Well, shut my mouth! – an expression of shock or astonishment, often interchangeable with: Well, butter my biscuit! or Well, I declare!
    • I don’t know you/him/her/it from Adam’s House Cat. – if the question “who’s Adam?” comes after this statement, your point has been proven.
    • Satan in a Sunday hat - a saying coined in True Blood’s backwoods of Bon Temps, Louisiana, simply meaning a devilish person disguised as an angel. Example: Be careful of that one, that girl’s Satan in a Sunday hat if you ask me.
    • You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. - be nice and things will more often sway your way, especially in the art of persuasion — sweet goes a lot farther than stink.
    • Nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rockin chairs! – If that doesn’t paint a good enough picture for you then I give up.

:: and if none of those work for you, try this ::

    • add in a honey, dear or darlin to your day – it will put a smile on your face and one on whoever is on the receiving end. Examples: Well, hey huneyy! How are you, dear? Thanks so much darlin! Say it to a friend, a stranger, store clerk, anyone really (except your boss, sometimes they don’t like that). *Note: Suga can also be used but can be more difficult for non-Southerners to pull off seamlessly.

    *Tips and Tricks to remember:

Talk slower and add syllables whenever possible for an added effect.  Southerners, some more than others (your’s truly for example), do this without even thinking and are sometimes asked to repeat what they said a few times. All part-n-partial of bein where you’re from, I guess.

G’s – for some reason we aren’t big fans of saying the ‘G’ in ing’s. It can seem odd at first but trust me, you’ll get the hang of it.

Blessing someone’s heart (bless your/her/his heart) is as good as a Get Out of Jail Free card in terms of conversating.

And smile. Smile, smile, smile until your cheeks cringe. A smile opens many doors and can get you out of a lot of sticky situations….remember the flies.

Well today’s lesson is over and it’s time for me to be gettin on with my day. I do so hope I’ve left you all with a smile and a lil Southern Sparkle to help get you through the week. Now darlin, you go on out and have a simply wonderful day and don’t forget to add a little sparkle and sass in any way possible.

    Pssst… I have a secret.

Want to know what it is??

    My middle initial … it isn’t a Bit’s an F.

So where on Earth does the B in Jennie B come from? Well I’m going to tell you. This question has been coming up more often lately as I changed my personal twitter name account and from a few others who have noticed when signing my signature. Here is the low down on my name for ya…

My full name is: Jennifer Frances

    My familiar name is: Jennie

My nickname ever since I was knee high: Jennie Boo

That’s right, just call me Jennie Boo & you’ll officially be a part of the masses. Believe me – when I say masses, I do indeed mean masses. Family, friends, friends of family, family of friends, teachers, coaches, strangers, cops, doctors, lawyers, you name it. Jennie Boo, Jenn Boo, Boo Boo, J Boo, JB …. it’s all me.

Pause for a quote: “What, you want me to name someone? You want like a name? Oh, God, the pressure of a name…” – Kit, Pretty Woman (you can fill in the rest of her quote)

So why do I keep a silly nick-name as part of my signature name? Because it’s a big part of me, of who I am. I love the name Frances, but I’ve always been Jennie Boo to all who have loved and cared for me (and to a few stragglers here and there). And to be honest, no matter how hard I could ever possibly try, Jennie Boo ain’t going anywhere for a long long time. *Bet my Sista Sista Jessica and Big Brother Jim had no idea it was going to stick like it did when they began the sensation all those years ago.

But it wasn’t until I moved out to Charleston after college that I realized maybe Jennie Boo didn’t exactly sound the most grown up or professional of all nick-names – a realization you quickly come to when nobody knows you to begin with. This may sound silly to some of you, but to me I was at a mini-crossroads. I was changing as a person but didn’t want to lose the identity I had grown to love. (Plus when you hit 22 & beyond, there’s just something about a stranger calling you Jennie Boo that doesn’t sit well anymore.) So what’s a girl to do?

I decided on a compromise with my beloved nick-name, the woman I was becoming and the direction I saw myself going. A combination of past, present and future, Jennie B.

(Of course everyone who originally called me Jennie Boo still does and more are added to the list by the day, but for generality’s sake, it’s Jennie B to the non-familiar masses.)

Now you know the truth and the whole truth ….. about my name. ;) I hope you always keep in mind though, that no matter how old you get, it always helps to remember the little girl you once were. And if you want the best of both worlds, just do what Tim Gunn says and Make it work!
