For the 3rd year in a row it’s time for a little Dr. John and his Litanie Des Saints. My reasoning in doing so can be found in last year’s post, part of which I’ve pasted below:

Why? Because I love this song. I love the artist. I love the sounds, the soul, the sway. I love the New Orleans feel it has. I love the message. I love the litany. I love the Lenten Season. I love it all.

That pretty much says it all. Enjoy!

When it comes to religion, I make it a rule to keep my thoughts and views quite private and rarely discuss the subject matter openly. Because tomorrow is Ash Wednesday – the beginning of the Season of Lent, my favorite religious Season – I’m going to break my rule a little bit. But just for this post.

As the Cradle Catholic that I am – born, baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church – Lent has always been a big part of the year for me. Although I’ve grown less strict in regards to practicing the Catholic Faith over the years and my views on spirituality have broadened to encompass many aspects of other religions, Lent has always held a very special place in my heart.

If you aren’t all that familiar, a basic rundown of the Season of Lent goes like this:

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days. Catholics are asked to do modest mortifications and acts of penance during Lent for the purification of the body and soul. Lent is a time of confession, fasting, abstinence, more prayer, [...] and more spiritual and corporal works of mercy. – Catholicism for Dummies

It’s like pushing the restart button on your current life situation. A 40 day meditation to step back and take a look at everything. Yes this is something that we should all do every day regardless of the time of year, but for most of us that doesn’t happen. With Lent, there’s just something about it being a sanctioned occurrence that almost gives a bit more hope that you’ll end the 40 days in a better place than where you started.

Call me naive, but I like the thought that millions of people all across the world are gearing up for these next 40 days, in the pursuit of bettering themselves for the betterment of all. Did I get a little too We are the World just now? Little bit? Oh well.

I’m a big proponent that you don’t have to be Catholic to celebrate the basic principles of Lent. I borrow Holidays and celebrations from other religions all the time. (I just like celebrating, can you tell?) Along with the penance and reflection part, I give something up – I always do better with tangible items – then I try to add something good. And I don’t cheat on Sundays. Posers.

This year I’m giving up pizza. Sounds easy, right? Not so much considering the fact I’ve found myself eating it 3 to 4 times a week for dinner and then left overs. As for the something good I’m adding, well that one’s going to remain private. (I gotta keep somethin to myself on this one.) But I’ll let you know how it all works out.

So what do you think? Going to give the Season of Lent a go this year? Push the restart button? Get your mental groove back? Think about it and get back to me. We can keep each other in check.

And since tomorrow is Ash Wednesday that means today is Fat Tuesday. (another wonderful celebration, might I add) And so I leave you with a reminder that Good Things Happen on Tuesdays and therefore …….

I’m posting the exact same song I posted last year on Ash Wednesday. Why? Because I love this song. I love the artist. I love the sounds, the soul, the sway. I love the New Orleans feel it has. I love the message. I love the litany. I love the lenten season. I love it all. Catchin’ my drift on this one?

And besides … who doesn’t like a little  Dr. John in their play list? Enjoy!

Now a title like that coming from me could mean a hundred different things. I’m sure a few of you are like wooah Jennie Boo, where you headin with this one? Well for the purposes of this blog post I am referring to a lyric from a song I posted a long time ago by Natasha Beddingfield, Unwritten.  (I’ll pause for a momentary sigh of relief from some of you..)

When I first posted the song it was about having a theme song. I have a ton of theme songs, but Unwritten is always right up there close to the top of the list every time.  If you aren’t familiar with the song, it’s time you get familiar with it.  The reason I have chosen to mention it again is because these past couple of weeks I’ve been doing a lot of thinking..about tubing.

Not the kind of tubing where you sit on an intertube with a big group of your friends and coolers and float down a river. I’m talking about real tubing, being pulled by a boat and praying that you don’t loose your bottoms if you let go.

    Double Ski Tube

Yea..that kind. I remember when I was little, even 7 years ago compared to 5 years ago, I wasn’t afraid to get on the tube with friends or by myself (although it was a well known fact I couldn’t hold the thing down solo) and get out there to take a ride. Of course I wanted the biggest waves and bumps and would scream and laugh till I lost my voice from flying 5 feet up in the air and getting pumbled in the water.

But that’s just it – I wasn’t scared. I didn’t stop to think, oh no I could break my arm or what if I swallow too much water or even what in the world am I going to do if I loose my bottoms?! The only thing I was concerned with is  that one moment, my love of life..and releasing any and all inhibitions and just ……….just living.

I miss those days. I truly do miss those days sometimes. Yes it is good to have a few apprehensions here and there but there is a big difference in being sensible and responsible as opposed to being out-right paranoid and over-analyzing a situation.

When I catch myself in those times, making excuses because of too many “what if’s,” I try to remember back to my tubing days and just go for it, release my fears and inhibitions and just go.

Besides – it’s good to get a mouth full of lake / river water every now and then, and we’ve all lost our bottoms at some point..right?!
